Preface
This trip location was selected by Sam, who turned 13 years old last October 13. This was his Golden Birthday and as such, he got to select the destination. It was a difficult task and took him years to decide. He had thought he wanted to go back to Alaska, and also considered Mt. Rushmore and the region of the southwestern South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming, but finally settled on Nova Scotia. His goal: to eat as much lobster and other seafood as he could!
August 1
We left Huntington at 6pm, picking Lisa up from her job at Enterprise car in Barboursville. About a half hour later she realized she left her purse at work. You can imagine the angst…..it all worked out. A coworker sent it Saturday via UPS to where we would be staying Monday evening. Until then, she was without her wallet (driver’s license) and her cell phone. Hard to tell which caused more hardship. *S* We drove to Pittsburgh where Sam and Lisa stayed with Dan and the kids picked us up from the motel the next morning.
August 2
We headed east; our goal was my sister’s house in Middlefield Connecticut. The big planned stop on the way was Dr. Mike’s, an ice cream shop we discovered about 20 years ago when we lived in Connecticut. This was Sam’s first time there and he was VERY pleased that a single scoop was so huge.
Susie and David decided to start our trip with the right attitude, so she made lobster for dinner…ahhhhhhh, what a way to start!!
August 3
Sam had asked to stop at Quincy Market in Boston so he could pick up a Red Sox hat and was excited to recognize the Big Green Wall of Fenway Park as we drove into the city. We made that our lunch break and were very lucky finding a free parking spot just 2 blocks away. The buskers were out: a Peruvian band, a silver pirate, and a team of jugglers upon high unicycles. The food choices were amazing. I had scallops and Graham opted for calamari. The kids wandered on their own, so their food choices also included popcorn.
We then drove on to Freeport, Maine, the home of LL Bean. We stayed in our first B&B of the trip. The kids wandered back to LL Bean later than night and confirmed not only that it is open 24 hours a day, but there is free coffee available after midnight.
August 4
The woman who ran the Freeport B&B urged us to eat lunch at Red’s Eats, a very small roadside stand where we could get what had been voted the #1 Lobster Roll in Maine. She said we would know when we were getting close because the traffic would slow down and then we would see a long line of people by the roadside stand just before the bridge.

It took us an hour and 20 minutes, waiting on line, before we got up there to order. It wasn’t a bargain, but it was on the inexpensive side, about $14 for a pound of lobster in a toasted hot dog bun with a side of melted butter. A marvelous yummy treat and one you should go to if you have a chance. Then on to Mt. Desert Island for 2 nights, the location of Acadia National Park. The scenery, spectacular, of course!
