2010 Vacation...First Day in England

Sam was excited that our rental car is a Mercedes. I have discovered that the hardest part of driving on the left is the perception I have from behnd the wheel and where I am in the driving lane. I tend to want to be further to the left and Graham and Sam have had to holler...move more to the right!!!

The highways are not hard to deal with. The narrow town streets are like home with parkng on both sides with really only one lane for driving and two way traffic. No crashes yet but perhaps some paint scratches from bushes! More about driving later.

Graham was thrilled to discover that near Canterbury in the small town of Faversham was a gunpowder mill that had been built in the 15th century! While it hasn't been used since the early 1800s, it has been kept as a historial museum. We have had nice emails with several of the people who volunteer there with hopes that Graham can spend days more with them in the future.

The Canterbury Tales Museum, located in a decommissioned church, depicts scenes from Chaucer's poems in a way that makes them much easier to absorbed than my high school reading requirement ever did.

We were a bit concerned whether we would be able to get into Canterbury Cathedral since we would be getting there so late in the afternoon and they indicated on the website that it would close to visitors at 5pm to prepare for the Sunday evening prayer service. We did get there in time though and were able to walk around the interior.

The architectural details, both in and out, are amazing, especially when you realize when this was built.

There are signs asking people to not take photos inside but we noticed just about everyone was. Here is a glimpse of the ceiling, looking straight up.

Our first night was spent at the Vicarage, a really comfortable b&b with wonderfully warm hosts. The house used to be the vicarage for an old church immediately adjacent. When the current owners purchased it they had consierable renovation to do as it had been used as an old age home and had 21 rooms. They renovated it to its originally floorplan with all new mechanicals and baths and kitchen.

The rear garden of the b&b has beautiful flowers.
